Award winning artist Denise Athanas grew up in Ethiopia and
Greece and spent her school years in Sudan and Great Britain. She moved to the
US 55 years ago and now lives in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Her life
experiences of the sights, sounds and local color around the world inform the
award winning paintings she creates, which are full of bold colors and lines.
She discovered that her style was not to paint realistically but rather to
paint in abstract. Her painting process is intuitive, spontaneous and gestural.
Athanas has been featured in several art magazines and art
books as Watercolor Artist, The Artist’s Magazine, AcrylicWorks1, AcrylicWorks3
and Journeys to Abstraction.
In addition to the American Watercolor Society (AWS),
National Watercolor Society (NWS), Watercolor-USA Honor Society (WHS) she has
earned Signature status in over 20 national societies including the Allied
Artists of America (AAA).
Athanas’ work has been selected and exhibited in numerous
national/international exhibitions receiving over 100 top awards, including
